Song of sadness

The tragic tale of Quebec pop star Nathalie Simard

Pop singer and former child star Nathalie Simard. (Des Ruisseaux Communications)

Earlier this month, Nathalie Simard announced she was cutting short the cross-Quebec tour for her comeback album, Il y avait un jardin. After a final Montreal concert on April 18, the 38-year-old singer said she would withdraw from the spotlight for good. Her reason: the seven years of sexual abuse she endured as an adolescent at the hands of manager Guy Cloutier has turned her off show business. In November 2004, Cloutier was sentenced to 42 months in prison for sexually assaulting Simard and another unidentified minor; he is now out on parole.

“I came back to prove that I was still able to sing. But this process opened my eyes. I believed I was strong, but I’m still fragile,” Simard told the popular Quebec entertainment magazine La Semaine. What she was seeking, Simard confided, was “more real and human” than what a career in the entertainment industry can offer.

The Quebec media has been uncharacteristically reserved in covering the latest chapter in this dramatic story, which has captivated the province since it broke four years ago. Perhaps the Quebec media are according Simard some much-needed peace. More likely, their silence is related to how uncomfortable Simard’s tale makes Quebecers feel, particularly those working in the entertainment industry.

Simard is one of Quebec’s most tragic figures. Her story is a bleak reminder of the sometimes exploitive nature of Quebec’s star system, a publicity machine often held up as an example of how the province is able to sustain its indigenous culture. Quebecers watch their own television and movies and listen to their own pop songs because they strongly identify with the performers. If pur laine Quebec is a big family, its entertainers are among its most cherished offspring. Who needs Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears when you’ve got Céline Dion and Star Académie prodigy Marie-Élaine Thibert?

Simard's 2005 memoir, Breaking the Silence. (Libre Expression) Simard's 2005 memoir, Breaking the Silence. (Libre Expression)

Cloutier is viewed as the architect of the modern star-making machine. Like Céline, Nathalie Simard and her older brother René came from a large rural Quebec family where money was tight; their father was an unemployed lumberjack. Cloutier signed René in the early 1970s, shortly after the nine-year-old soprano won a prize on Les Découvertes de Jen Roger, a Quebec television talent contest. At the time, Nathalie was still a toddler. By the time he was 21, René had recorded over 20 albums; at one point, he was selling more records in Quebec than Elvis or the Beatles.

Nathalie recorded her first album at nine, and at 13, was withdrawn from school. She essentially lived with the Cloutier family for most of her adolescence, enduring a relentless concert and recording schedule. By the age of 13, she had three platinum records (for sales of more than 100,000) and two gold records (50,000-plus). Before Céline and Cirque du Soleil, the Simards were Quebec entertainment’s big success stories.

Cloutier, who also managed other Quebec personalities (including actor Clodine Desrochers and singer Natasha St-Pier) and produced the popular TV series La Fureur and Loft Story, understood the power of media convergence long before Izzy Asper and Pierre Karl Péladeau. Like his longtime buddy René Angélil (Céline’s husband), Cloutier’s career as an impresario kicked into high gear in the 1970s. This was post-Quiet Revolution Quebec, when the province’s media was expanding amid a groundswell for homegrown pop culture. A combination music and TV producer, talent agent and concert promoter, Cloutier soon developed a winning formula: he found performers with the talent and stamina to perform live, on TV and in the recording studio, and publicized them on every medium available.

Born in Lac-Saint-Jean, Cloutier cultivated the image of a self-made man during the era of “Quebec Inc.,” when the province was promoting itself as an economic powerhouse. Cloutier shrewdly exploited Quebec’s appetite for American-style entertainment, albeit in French. “I’m not a separatist,” he once told L’Actualité magazine. “I’m an opportunist. I ignore U.S. pop culture just as the U.S. ignores us. I am here to mine the Quebec market.”

With her perky pageboy haircut and stellar voice, Nathalie Simard was an impresario’s dream. In addition to her bestselling albums, she starred in two television programs: Le Village de Nathalie and Les Mini-stars de Nathalie. She also promoted her own line of clothing and was a spokeswoman for the Metro grocery chain.

“All the little girls born at the beginning of the 1970s in Quebec wanted to be Nathalie Simard,” writes her biographer, Michel Vastel, in Briser le Silence (Break the silence) (2005), a book commissioned by Simard. Vastel caused an uproar while promoting his tell-all. During an appearance on the popular talk show Tout le monde en parle, he wondered aloud why Simard’s financial and sexual exploitation went unnoticed for nearly a decade. As Simard tells it in Briser le silence, Cloutier would rape her while she slept in his family home, which was often filled with guests who had spent the night partying. Vastel accused René, her legal guardian at the time, of turning a blind eye.

In the same show, the journalist took on other big fish in the Quebec entertainment pond, blasting Quebec’s ADISQ, the industry association that represents Quebec music producers and performers, for not taking away Cloutier’s lifetime achievement award after the impresario pleaded guilty to sexual assault. Vastel also alleged that Radio-Canada was “profiting from the exploits of a pedophile” by continuing to produce shows with Novem, the company Cloutier founded.

(Paul Chiasson/Canadian Press)Rene Simard, left, accompanied by his wife, Marie-Josee Taillefer, arrives at a news conference to comment on allegations from his sister's biographer. (Paul Chiasson/Canadian Press)

Vastel’s tirade was met with criticism from all corners. Ordinary Quebecers couldn’t believe he would dare to implicate René Simard, who remains a popular television personality. A few days later, René held a news conference denying the biographer’s allegations. Vastel’s fellow journalists accused him of not understanding Quebec or le monde du showbiz. Only veteran La Presse columnist Nathalie Petrowski commended Vastel, noting that it took an “outsider” to talk about the dark side of Quebec show business. (Vastel was born in Normandy, France.)

Quebec entertainment journalists are a strange breed. Sure, criticism and analysis exists, but those who earn their bread and butter writing for the tabloids and gossip magazines act, for the most part, like adoring fans. I once observed a rookie entertainment journalist apologize to actor Pierre Curzi (Les Invasions barbares) for asking him a political question backstage at an awards ceremony — even though Curzi had just declared he was running for the Parti Québécois. (He is now a member of Quebec’s national assembly.) A veteran reporter once revealed to me that he tries to be as neutral as possible when covering film and television, because he may want to write for the small screen some day. “Many of these people are my friends,” he said. “I’m not going to criticize what my friends are doing.”

This hesitation to criticize the big players in entertainment may be why Simard’s abuse went unnoticed for so long. As a journalist, disparaging Cloutier 20 years ago would have been akin to speaking ill of Quebecor Inc. president Pierre Karl Péladeau today. It’s possible, but it’s probably a career-limiting move. Taking on Cloutier would likely have been viewed as a form of cultural betrayal.

The Simard story is a reminder of the implicit understanding between entertainers, producers, publicists and the media that everyone will politely give each other what they need. As a result, stars are left alone as long as they pose nicely for pictures and answer a few banal queries. It’s a system that, for the most part, keeps the multimillion-dollar Quebec entertainment industry chugging along. But it also means that sometimes power goes unchecked.

Japan Pop Star

Utada Hikaru -Japan/USA

Utada Hikaru was born in the United States to a famous enka singer and a songwriter, who not only made sure that Hikaru inherited their talents, but also that she learned English before returning to Japan. As a child, Hikaru, spent time in recording studios soaking in the music and, at age 10, she began writing her own song lyrics in English. During that time, she was rocking out to bands like Queen and Bon Jovi, but later on got into R&B. By age 12, she had released three singles in the U.S. under the pseudonym, Cubic U.

When she released her first album, "First Love," in Japan, it immediately went to No. 1 on the charts and became the most popular debut album ever released in Japan, selling eight million copies. Utada is currently living in New York City, and is an undergraduate student at Columbia University.
(Quote from Time Magazine)

Her debut CD, First Love (1999), sold more than 9.5 million copies, making it the best-selling album in Japanese history

Around 8 years ago I made a short film using one of the tracks of Utada’s Automatic Album. Here is that track on YouTube. I hope you enjoy.

Mika Nakashima - Japan Jazz/Pop Singer

Its exciting to see young singers take to Jazz especially when they are mainly from the J-Pop, Rock genre. Mika Nakashima is truly a fresh breeze being a pop star and a Jazz singer. Born in 1983 she arrived on the commercial music scene in 2001 after being selected to act in a TV drama. She is probably the most serious female vocalist around her age. Her first hit the same year "Stars" sold over 500,000 copies. Her 2nd d single sold out on the first day. He next 3 singles sold over 100,000 copies each. She released "True" in 2002. Since then she starred in Nana and Nana2, two films. Nana gross over 4 billion yen last year. At 23 this is a truly amazing achievement. He has also charted in South Korea.

Here a a site for more information on the Nana side

While we are on the Nat Cole Song "Sentimental

Here is another singer from Korea that sings the same song who goes by the name of KANGTA. A good rendition for a singer that probably is not experienced in english as a language. There two places where the vocals seem to go off but as I mentioned this is common in live performances.

Here is "I Love You For Sentimental Reasons"

FAME AND FAMILY: Chan mixed motherhood and work, sparking "the Agnes controversy."

Courtesy Agnes Chan

She's a pop singer with her own line of clothing, a children's advocate who leads Japan's UNICEF committee and a Stanford PhD who has co-authored a new scholarly book with education professor Myra Strober. But on this rainy afternoon, Agnes Chan is keeping up with a different facet of her career: she's on her way to the Tokyo Television building, where she's scheduled as a guest on a quiz show.

Stepping out of the chauffeur-driven car, Chan, 43, makes her way to an anonymous dressing room and begins a remarkable metamorphosis. She is dressed stylishly but without a trace of color: grey knobby sweater, a pair of black slacks with an attached, kiltlike skirt. She seems pale, fragile, exhausted from her overnight trip to Yokohama, where she gave a concert yesterday. But here in the dressing room, she quickly changes into a sparkly silver Lycra suit and fastens showy rhinestones to her earlobes. She applies mauve eyeshadow, finishes the look with berry-red lipstick and heads for the bright lights of the set.

Chan, PhD '94, knows about transformation. Born in Hong Kong, she became a singing star at 14. Three years later, at the invitation of a Japanese record company, she moved to Tokyo, where she was adopted by the Japanese public as a pop idol. The press dubbed her "the fairy who came from Hong Kong." Over the next quarter century, she kept cranking out hits in Japanese. But she also added steadily to her public portfolio, writing newspaper and magazine columns, appearing on television news and game shows and raising money for charitable causes.

It was her starring role in the "Agnes controversy," though, that earned her the most fame&emdash;and a measure of infamy. The episode erupted in February 1988, about three months after the birth of her first child. Chan, by then a celebrity with a half-dozen regular TV gigs, began bringing her son and a nanny to the television studio so she could nurse the baby in her dressing room. The arrangement enraged Japanese conservatives, who thought Chan should stay at home with her son. Feminists turned on her, too, accusing her of presuming to speak for working women who didn't have the same economic advantages.

Pop Star Appeals Court Dismissal Of Libel Suit Against Blogger

Pop singer Phuong Thanh filed an appeal Monday against a Ho Chi Minh City court’s dismissal of her defamation lawsuit against a freelance journalist whom she had accused of sullying her reputation.

Thanh said the Tan Binh District court’s rejection of her plaint against Huong Tra on the grounds that the law lacked provisions to punish bloggers was unreasonable.

The two entries in Tra’s blog Cogaidolong – for which she had filed the suit – had seriously harmed her prestige and honor, she said.

The court’s verdict last Friday would create a dangerous precedent, giving bloggers carte blanche to defame others, she added.

Her suit alleged, among other things, that Tra had written in her blog that the security guards at Thanh’s concert last September 29 had “opened the doors wide to let people in.”

This, she claimed, suggested that the audience had been allowed in for free, and thus, the show was a failure.

BoA

BoABig-in-Japan Korean pop princess BoA's success in Japan means more Korean artists are on the way...

The "Showcase Live" buffet at Velfarre in Tokyo this week may have included a bowl of kimchi but headline Korean J-Pop star BoA's performance was more about music than nationality.

With boy band Tohoshinki and the female foursome Tenjochiki as support, Japan's largest independent record label, Avex Group Holdings, and Korean management agency SM Entertainment held the event to celebrate BoA's fifth anniversary as a successful artist in Japan and her achievements in Asia.

BoA and six backup dancers kicked off her two-song set with "Nanairo no Ashita" (Tomorrow's Seven Colors), a poppy double-A side single released in April that reached as high as number three on the Oricon Weekly Sales chart.

"BoA is a star," said Araki Takashi, CEO of Avex, of the winner of the winner of the Most Influential Artist in Asia award at 2004 MTV Asia Awards. "She has developed beyond her cute image into a mature and beautiful artist."

With white boots and her hair pulled into a ponytail, BoA has indeed come a long way since her debut single for the Japanese market, a Japanese version of her Korean song "ID; Peace B," way back in 2001.

This year's album "Outgrow" is her fourth Japanese album to reach number one. Her 2005 single "Do the Motion" was only the fifth single by a non-Japanese artist to top the charts.

The video for "Key of Heart," which was shot in the mountains of California and whose single is set to hit stores in a five weeks, was shown to the 500-person <>music industry crowd immediately following her second song, "Everlasting," a ballad released as a single in February.

Tenjochiki opened the show with three hip-shaking dance selections, including their January Japan debut single "Boomerang."

The all-girl group will release their third single, the reggae-inspired "Juicy Love," early next month in Japan.

Avex executives are hopeful that the rap-influenced quintet Tohoshinki have the same positive vibe and momentum as EXILE just before they made it big in late 2003.

Tohoshinki, who displayed equal parts crooning, midsection-clutching, and rapping, through most of their three-song set, will release their seventh single "Sky" in August.

Though all of the artists being Korean, Avex emphasised that the event was first and foremost about the musicians themselves as artists.

"They are moulded and developed," Avex said about the performers in a statement following the show, "for the Japanese market as J-Pop artists with lyrics all in Japanese."

Kim Young-Min, SM Entertainment's CEO, said that the future of its artists in Asia appears bright.

"Not only have many artists under S.M. already become very successful," he said, "but there are still countless others who can reach the same level of success."

Bae made his debut in TV drama “Salut D’Amour” (also known as “Greetings of Love”) in 1994. He starred in a few more dramas before making his breakthrough in 1997 with “First Love”. First Love was a huge success in Korea, but is relatively unknown in other countries.

DOB: November 28, 1979
Birth place: Carson City, Michigan, USA

Profession: Actor and model

Daniel Henney Biography

Daniel’s father is an American of British (some say Irish) descent while her mother an American of Korean descent. He was a basketball player and attended colleges on scholarship; and admitted into University of Illinois at Chicago.

Daniel didn’t graduate from university though; he decided to quit his study and ventured into modelling in 2001 instead. He started modelling in Korea as well as some other Asian and European countries.

Daniel was already an established supermodel before making his acting debut in 2005… first in some cameo roles for “Hello Franceska”, before making his full debut with “My Lovely Sam Soon” the same year.

Sam Soon is the most popular Korean drama in 2005; although Daniel was starring as the supporting actor, his performance (and look) was widely notice.

Daniel then starred in another decent drama “Spring Waltz” in 2006; he also made his movie debut “Seducing Mr Perfect” but the movie didn’t perform very well on box office. His 2nd movie “My Father” (2007) did much better though.

Seducing Mr Perfect however revealed another of Daniel’s talent… singing. He sang the ending theme song together with Alex from boyband Clazziquai. I wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel managed to ink a recording deal and releases his album soon.

Loso is a Thai rock band fronted by singer-guitarist-composer Seksan Sukpimay (aka Sek Loso). The band was formed in the mid-1990s in Bangkok, Thailand. Its name is derived from a play on hi-so, Thai slang for socialites and the upper class (from English ‘high society’), and is meant to reflect the group’s humble origins. It is one of the first Thai bands to achieve success on the international music scene, having played festivals, including South By Southwest and Glastonbury, and to be produced by a Western record producer.

History

One of the first popular Thai rock bands of the 1990s, Loso was founded by Seksan Sookpimay (b. August 7, 1974 in Nakhon Ratchasima).

Seksan, the son of an itinerant rice-farming family, moved to Bangkok at age 12 and found work in a shop owned by an aunt, making jewelry. He also worked in a factory that made air conditioners. In 1991, inspired by his favorite artists, including Guns N’ Roses and Carabao, he saved up enough to buy an inexpensive guitar, learned some chords and talked his way onto the stage at one of Bangkok’s best-known live-music venues at the time, Austin Pub. Within a year, the 17-year-old singer-guitarist was leading the house band, playing covers of Thai rock, indie and pop, as well as Green Day, Nirvana, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. [1]

Within a couple years, Sek had written 10 songs. With drummer Kittisak “Yai” Khotkam (b. January 22, 1973) and bassist Apirath “Rath” Sukkhajitr (b. September 20, 1967), Sek recorded the tracks in a night and sent the demo tape to Asanee Chotikul of the popular Thai rock duo Asanee-Wasan. Called Lo Society, the band’s demo tape was released as an album in 1996 on Asanee’s indie record label and distributed by GMM Grammy, Thailand’s biggest record company. It sold 1.5 million copies.

Loso released eight more albums, each selling at least 1 million copies (”platinum” status on the RIAA certification scale), and some selling 3 million copies.

Among the band’s most popular songs is “Som Sarn” (Thai: “?????” or “Hesitant”), which features an acoustic guitar intro that is widely recognized in Thailand. Another hit was Pantip, with its hook chorus, “mai bai Pantip” (”no go Pantip” or “I won’t go to Pantip”). The song is about a man dating a woman and taking her shopping at World Trade Center, MBK Center and Siam Square, but he refuses to take her to Pantip Plaza because his ex-girlfriend has a shop there.

The band’s line up remained stable except for a period where Apirath was replaced by Nattaphon “Klang” Suntharaanu. Klang Loso played bass on the Rock & Roll and Losoland albums and toured with the band. Apirath Loso then returned to bass duties with the band until its demise.

Just about all the band’s albums are accompanied by the release of a karaoke VCD, featuring music videos of the songs. Through the music videos and his appearance as pitchman for the M-150 brand energy drink, Sek Loso, usually wearing sunglasses, has achieved cultural icon status in Thailand. He even spoofed his celebrity image with a Sek look-a-like making a cameo appearance in the 2005 Thai action film, Tom-Yum-Goong. The song that accompanies the M-150 commercials, the ballad “Teh Yang Thai” (”???????????????”), is another hit.

After the release of the 2002 live album Loso Concert, Loso broke up, with Sek Loso becoming a solo act. Kittisak and Apirath formed a new band, Fahrenheit. Sek released his debut solo album, 7 August, in 2003 and duetted with veteran string and luk thung star Bird McIntyre, for the 2004 hit album, Bird Son Bird Sek. The pair played sold-out concerts at Bangkok’s Impact Arena. [2]

Sek, meanwhile, had aspirations beyond the Thai music scene: In Thai music terminology, he wanted to “go inter”. He had been reading biographies of his rock idol, Jimi Hendrix, and decided that to achieve international stardom he needed to go to England as Hendrix had. In 2004, he moved to London and enrolled in an ESOL school, and after six months of intensive learning, he could speak English with an upper-class British accent. He began writing songs in English and placed advertisements in NME for a bass player and drummer to form a new Loso, auditioning prospects by having them perform the entire Hendrix album, Are You Experienced.

Loso playing in Mannheim, Germany in 2006. Loso playing in Mannheim, Germany in 2006.

So with drummer Eric Lavansch (”Eric Loso“) and Anthony Wilson (”Eddie Loso“) on bass Sek took his new band to Thailand for a six-month tour. During this tour the band was supported by the Thai band Silly Fools.

With the help of Tim Carr, an American writer and former A&R executive living in Thailand who had worked with such bands as the Beastie Boys, Megadeth, Ash and Cornershop, a demo tape of the band was sent to some producers. The first to respond was Owen Morris, who had produced albums by Ash, Oasis and The Verve. Morris was flown to Thailand by GMM Grammy to be introduced to Sek. After seeing the band perform before 50,000 people at the Pattaya International Music Festival, Morris was duly impressed. Hitting the studio, Morris produced three songs from the demo album, “I Wish I Could”, “I Just Wonder” and “Fly Away”, along with “Love Is My Religion” and two “rave-ups” that were improvised and developed in the recording sessions, for Sek’s debut English-language album, For God’s Sake, which is awaiting release as of December 2006. Sek also recorded some Thai tracks with Owen Morris, “Chun mai sum-oiy” (”???????????”), “Karm chun pai korn” (”?????????????”) and a punk version of the earlier hit, “Pantip”, which are included in the 2005 compilation, Sek Loso:The Collection.

Owen invited former Oasis member and rhythm guitarist Paul “Bonehead” Arthurs to Bangkok to see the band. Bonehead loved the band’s sound and ended up playing on some tracks and he also played gigs with the band. Eric and Eddie returned to UK after the recordings were finished for a well earned break with their families. For various reasons Eddie Loso left the band after recording an advert for Yamaha with Sek in London.

Eric went back to Thailand (with new bass player Rob Hudson and Bonehead) to work on the final mixes of the For God’s Sake album. In early 2005, the whole crew returned to England to finish the album at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios. There they were invited to play at Glastonbury and the Patti Smith Meltdown Festival. After finishing the recordings Rob Hudson decided to leave. He didn’t want to be away from the UK for lengthy periods required to do the Thai concerts, and subsequently the US tour.

In January and February 2005 Sek took Thai musicians Vorabut Tiaprasert (Tom Loso), Tu Loso and Tok Loso (on rhythm guitar, drums and bass guitar respectively) on a very successful tour in Europe. Back in Thailand they toured during March and April at outdoor venues in Nong Khai, Phuket (where Sek donated his income from the gig for the victims of the December 26th 2004 tsunami), also Krabi, Hat Yai, Thung Song, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Chumphon. The outdoor concerts also featured Lanna Commins and Big Ass. The tour ended in Bangkok at the Hollywood Awards on April 7th to an audience of approximately 150,000 people. Using video footage from nine of the above concerts Thai-TV made a one hour concert show and it was broadcast on May 1st.

The band needed a new bassist so Chris Borsberry (a long established friend of Eric from school days and teenage bands) flew out to Bangkok to be “tested” by Sek and the rapport was instant. Sek had met him previously at the Yamaha advert filming. Chris had got the part as the “Evil Guitarist” with the Union Jack guitar. It was pure coincidence as he’d only gone along with Eric to make up numbers and the producers loved his evil look. It was doubtful if Sek or anyone else realized at the time that he could actually play the guitar. So he swapped from six strings to four and Chris was working in the studio the next day. Two days later he was playing with the band at 2005 Bangkok Music Festival in front of a huge audience!

Following the death of his father, Sek released a song in his memory as a limited edition single called Tiger in June 2005. Only 100 copies of Tiger were released along with a bonus CD of songs from the Pattaya International Music Festival. Tiger is also featured on the For God’s Sake recordings.

In the summer of 2005 Loso embarked on a heavy schedule of international touring, including appearances at rock festivals including South By Southwest, the Glastonbury Festival and Patti Smith’s Meltdown at Royal Festival Hall.

Bonehead left the group after a few gigs during the US leg of the tour. Sek had guitarist Tom Loso flown out from Thailand, who then became a permanent member of the band. Tom is an excellent guitarist in his own right and he isn’t just the rhythm player. He played on Sek’s newest albums The Collection (2005) and Black & White (2006); he is seen on the karaoke VCD versions of these albums and also on the Bird Sek Live Concert (VCD & DVD July 2004). Bonehead sometimes played with the band as a guest during the remainder of 2005, notably at a concert outside the World Trade Center in Bangkok on the 20th of December.

The band played their first Middle Eastern concert in Manama, Bahrain at the Delmon International Hotel on January 27, 2006.

They appeared in “Sood Chewit Khon Thai”, an concert at Impact Arena on April 25 along with other Thai bands, including Big Ass, Bodyslam, Lanna Commins and Potato.

Sood Chewit Khon Thai VCD was released in June 2006 and features performances by all the bands.

A new Thai-language album, Black & White, was released in July 2006.

Sek Loso was among an all-star cast of Thai artists performing a rock opera adaptation of the Ramakien national epic on July 28-30, 2006 at the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York. Sek was cast in the lead role as Phra Rama, with Noi of the band Pru as Hanuman.

The first night’s performance was disrupted by an altercation between Sek and Noi, in which Sek struck Noi on the head with a shoe. The two musicians then grappled with each other and eventually took their fight offstage. A video of altercation was shown on television in Thailand and was later posted to YouTube. Sek refused to return to the production and Loso rhythm guitarist Tom Loso replaced the frontman as Phra Rama for the remainder of the show. [3] [4]

Other Thai artists participating in Ramakien: A Rak Opera were the band Modern Dog, the DJ-production duo Photo Sticker Machine, Belgian-Thai singer Palmy, rapper Joey Boy and singer Rik Vachilipilun. New York singer-guitarist Arto Lindsay also performed.

The band are continuing to tour around Thailand to promote the new album Black & White.

At some shows the former bassist Rath Loso has played as a guest. He is now the band’s bassist for all the Thailand shows. This is because Chris Borsberry played his last Thailand gig at The Sky Club, Srinakarin in Bangkok on October 28th 2006. Chris is still a member of the band and will play in future International shows.[6]

In November, 2006 a DVD & VCD set called 10 Years Rock was released and features 32 karaoke videos.

Sa Dingding China Pop Star

China may be storming the world right now, but it’s never had good luck with pop starts. That could change with Sa Dingding, a half-Mongolian singer/songwriter, who sings entirely in Tibetan over a velvety mix of traditional instruments like the zither and modern electronica. Universal’s hoping the whole eclectic, ethnic mix will make her prime iPod material, the Independent reports. Sa’s style and ethnic eccentricities have also so far allowed her to skirt the landmine of Chinese music. China’s pop stars are typically teeny cookie-cutters because Beijing doesn’t tolerate true rock n’ roll dissension. Sa avoids politics entirely, towing the party line when asked. The current Tibet situation “makes it extremely awkward for her,” said one world music veteran.

HK pop star Edison Chen

HK pop singer Edison Chen [file photo]
One of the boys taunted Chen with hip-hop dance moves and then both punched the 23-year-old star, knocking him to the ground in the Central financial district, the mass circulation Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily reported.

Chen, one of Hong Kong's top new singers, chased and caught the boys as they tried to board a bus and turned them in to police, the report said.

The boys were later freed because Chen decided not to press charges, the Chinese-language Ming Pao Daily News reported.

Police confirmed that a man surnamed Chen had a shoving match with two boys, aged 16 and 17, which resulted in facial injuries to Chen.

Police spokesman Cheung Ka-po declined to provide further details, but said no one was arrested or charged in the incident.

A press conference was held by Chen on Tuesday to explain the details. The singer had difficulty walking. He said an ankle was sprained while chasing the two boys and his right cheekbone and ear were also injured.

However the young singer-actor showed maturity by taking the attack in stride.

“Their lives would be ruined if I pressed charges. Their mother asked me to forgive them. I went to the hospital and got checked out and since it’s just bruises, I decided to let it go.”

But the singer admitted that if this happened a few years ago, he would never forgive them. “But what am I supposed to do挂 They are just kids,” said Chen.

The singer said he would lay low for a while and just chill.
